The onset of winter cold, short days, lack of sunlight, and harsh weather keep us indoors when we prefer to "stay warm." The deficiency of seasonal fruits and vegetables deprives us of vitamins and minerals, and we have an irresistible urge to eat hot, spicy, and rich foods and to comfort ourselves with sweets and wine.
This is the time to prepare the body for the hibernation period, to strengthen resistance to cold and viral attacks while maintaining energy, willpower, and motivation.
The beginning of winter is traditionally associated with the biological rhythms of the Kidney bioenergetic meridian. Its seasonal weaknesses can manifest on all levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual.

The physical level concerns the weaknesses of the urinary and hormonal systems, including sex hormones and those of the adrenal glands - adrenaline, noradrenaline, corticosteroids, and aldosterone. One may feel weakened, aged, experience a decrease in libido, have irregular or painful periods, premenstrual syndrome, or hot flashes, as if our own "fridge" - the Kidneys - were out of order. Disruptions in adrenal gland function can lead to excessive stress reactions, orchestrated by adrenaline and noradrenaline, with palpitations, autonomic reactions, blood pressure fluctuations, fainting, or easy nausea. Additionally, aldosterone dysfunction can cause water retention, edema, or sudden and significant weight gain without changes in diet. This might be why the Kidney and Bladder meridians are traditionally associated with the element "Water," as the urinary system is responsible for water metabolism and elimination. Variations in corticosteroids manifest as insomnia and inflammation, particularly in the joints, spine, and bone pain, associated with the Kidney meridian. Another vulnerability may affect the auditory system, leading to sensations of vertigo or tinnitus.
From an emotional perspective, the Kidney meridian is associated with motivation, the will to live, and fulfilling one's mission despite life's challenges, difficulties, and obstacles. Our emotional state can be weakened during the winter period by fears, sometimes inexplicable, when we feel "on edge," extremely sensitive. Our mind can be more easily disturbed by the fear of illness and death. Just as morning frost can trap grass in a small cage of ice, fear can block our movements and impulses, causing us to lose our motivation. It is sometimes easier to give up and stay under a warm blanket rather than venture out into a dangerous world. The ancients said that the bioenergetic Kidney meridian represents our genetic program, our nature and identity, and our ability to withstand bad weather, cold, and aggression. The positive emotions that strengthen the Kidney meridian are gentleness and calmness, the sensation of inner peace, like at the bottom of the ocean where the surface storms' waves are unfelt.
According to ancient philosophy, "water does not face obstacles, but flows around them and rises from the ground." This is a good lesson on how to react to obstacles and problems: not confronting them directly but finding divergent ways to avoid open conflict while achieving our life goals, gently but surely. Water is the strongest and most indestructible element in nature: no matter how many blows it takes, water opens and closes behind the fist without ever being damaged.
